War Thunder Ground Battles Guide: Lineups, Armor and Positioning
Ground Arcade and Realistic fundamentals for lineups, cover, armour analysis, ammunition and useful team roles.

Win more ground battles by arriving with a balanced lineup, moving from cover to cover, checking likely armour weak points before the match and taking shots you can finish rather than exposing the whole vehicle for a quick attempt.
Build roles, not a row of favourites
A useful ground lineup can answer more than one map state. Combine a dependable first vehicle with a mobile option, anti-air or another role you can actually operate at the lineup's Battle Rating.
- Keep vehicle BRs close enough that every spawn can contribute.
- Choose the first spawn for the map and objective, not habit.
- Carry a fallback vehicle you understand.
- Use anti-air as a real team role, not a last-second punishment spawn.
Expose less of the vehicle
Hard cover, sight lines and escape routes matter more than a theoretical armour number. Stop before the crest, scan, expose only what is needed for the shot and reverse into safety before the opponent completes an aim.
- Cross open ground only with a destination and timing window.
- Do not sit in the same firing position after being seen.
- Keep the hull oriented for the vehicle's actual armour layout.
- Listen for engines when visual information is limited.
Test ammunition and weak points
Use the in-game armour and protection analysis tools to test the ammunition you actually carry against vehicles near your Battle Rating. The goal is a repeatable first shot, not memorising every armour plate at once.
- Learn crew, ammunition and gun-breech locations on common opponents.
- Carry enough ammunition for the match without filling every rack by default.
- Re-check performance after shell or damage-model patches.
- If a shot fails unexpectedly, reproduce it in analysis rather than a live battle.
War Thunder FAQ
Short answers to the questions covered by this guide.
Why am I facing stronger tanks in War Thunder?
The matchmaker can place vehicles within a BR spread, and the highest relevant vehicle in your lineup can determine the bracket. Check the mode-specific lineup calculation and avoid one vehicle far above the rest.
How do I learn tank weak points?
Use protection analysis with the exact attacker, shell, distance and angle you expect. Start with common opponents and learn one reliable disabling or finishing shot at a time.
Practical advice with visible limits.
The official sources establish release status, supported modes and named systems. The recommendations organise those systems into a repeatable method; they do not invent hidden values or promise a permanent meta.
